Good with other dogs.
Good with cats.  Foromer owner said that he used to cuddle with their cat.
Good with older children.

This large, handsome, loving Dober came to us from a family that had recently moved from his since-a-youngster home.  It seemed he wasn’t adjusting well to their new house and was feeling some anxiety.  (I can still see some in his face, but I think the most important thing for him is to feel secure, wherever he is, and he wasn’t feeling it after the move.)  Probably there was lots going on with the family, all being very busy with packing and unpacking and getting settled in the new home.  I’ve seen it in humans, and it looks as though it manifested in him, too.

He was also counter surfing, cruising the trash, and eating from the other dogs’ bowls (thus the weight gain.)  I am convinced this “acting out” has its source in his feeling neglected - again, not an uncommon human behavior, either.  A new home where he gets the attention he needs to soothe him and help him relax really should do the trick.

Here’s what his former owner said:
“He is a great dog for the right person.  Dexter needs someone that has more time to devote to just him.  He is a big lap dog and needs a lot of love and attention.  He likes to hang out with our teenage son and stays in his room a lot.  He doesn't like to stay outside long and  will bark to come inside.  He really is sweet and sensitive - so much so that he gets bullied at the dog park because he's such a wuss!”

I really think that sums it up.  Clearly he’s a devoted, by-your-side Dober who just needs a home where that can hang out with his humans.

Mama Carol describes him as a “gentle giant, very loving and affectionate,” and reports that he knows to sit, lay, and come; he’ll also flip a biscuit off his nose on command.  And size notwithstanding, he easily enters and exits an SUV.

One of our volunteers adds this comment:
“This big guy is an attention magnet.  If you’re looking for a big guy that will stay by your side indoor and help you with chores in the yard, this is your guy.”

I think you’ve read enough to get the picture.  If your heart is big enough for a hundred-plus pound Dober who wants to be with you every moment, make an appointment to meet him once your application is approved, and see for yourself what a total love bug he is.  Just bring the car with the good springs for transporting him home with you, if you do! :-)
