This large, handsome Doberboy was found as an emaciated stray and is happily residing with us for now as he awaits a new home. He’s very intelligent and engaged, yet wonderfully gracious and calm; relaxed but alert and ready for action on your cue. It’s always amazing to me how a dog of this breeding and quality ends up as a stray, but I’m glad we’re here to meet their needs when they do.

As often happens with strays, he came to us with heart worms, but he’s completely clear now, out of confinement, and back to running and playing in the fields. And as is sometimes the case with fawn Dobers, his coat was thin, but it his coat has come back in, now that he's on good food.  And as you can see from his pictures, he’s wonderfully formed and breathtakingly handsome.

(Please keep in mind that heart worm treatment is expensive, and we actually have three Dobers right now who are heart worm positive. Even if you can’t adopt right now, please consider making a donation toward the extra expense of treatments. In this way, you have a direct part in helping us see that these dogs are healthy and ready for adoption to their new forever homes.)

He has a HUGE, deep bark when he’s alerting of potential danger, and a look so serious it would keep the boldest stranger from trying to enter the yard. At the same time, he’s very playful and will entertain himself with a toy if there’s no one to play with him at the moment.  In fact, he carries his little rubber kangaroo toy around with him everywhere.  And, as is typical of the breed, he also loves car rides.

Here’s what some of our volunteers have to say about him:

“Ichabod is a beautiful boy. When I was in his run, he laid with his head on my lap. He was good on a leash and enjoyed taking in the smells on our walk.”

“This handsome Doberboy is sure to catch your eye and capture your heart! I had the pleasure of spending some quality time with Ichabod, and he is an extremely grateful, curious, and laid back guy! Although he is a strong, big boy, he does fairly well on a leash with some basic training tactics, and he is perfectly comfortable riding in a car! What a handsome fella!”

You may recall Washington Irving’s character, Ichabod Crane, from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Here’s how Irving described the character in his story: “He was tall, but exceedingly lank, with narrow shoulders, long arms and legs, hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves, feet that might have served for shovels, and his whole frame most loosely hung together. His head was small, and flat at top, with huge ears, large green glassy eyes and a long snipe nose, so that it looked like a weather-cock perched upon his spindle neck, to tell which way the wind blew.”

It’s plain to see that our Ichabod far exceeds Irving’s character in the good looks department, and I dare say he’s superior in every other way, as well.

If this large, handsome, playful fellow seems like a fit for you family, make an appointment to meet him and see for yourself if he may be the protagonist for the story of your life, going forward.
