When I saw the name of this sweet Doberboy I smiled, because I’m old enough to remember well the Life Cereal ad from the 70s that featured a boy named Mikey.  If you haven’t seen it in a while or perhaps have never seen it at all, here’s a link; it’s worth watching:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLQ0LZSnJFE .  Isn’t that cute?

Our Doberboy Mikey came to us from owners who could no longer afford to care for him and their other dog, so they surrendered them both to a shelter from where, fortunately, he found his way to DRT.

Apparently they were a while in making the decision, because he is underweight and was covered in fleas and ticks upon intake. Thankfully those are all problems that are easily solved, and he's clear of both even as he continues to gain much-needed weight.

You can see from his pictures that he's a gentle-natured Dober – quiet and obedient and wanting to please. He's a boy who will be very grateful for loving human contact and kindness, and who will just love to be with his human, whether it's playing in the yard, walking nicely along on leash, or lying on a lap.

Our volunteers have shared the following observations:

“Mikey was a little tentative at first, but full of love and kisses once he felt comfortable. He certainly loves to play with his stuffed toys.”

“At first, Mikey would not take a treat from my hand and I thought that meant he was named perfectly, after the little boy in the cereal ad who was so picky. But when a treat fell on the ground and he picked it up and ate it, I realized that he wasn’t being picky; he was afraid he wasn’t allowed to take the food from my hand. Poor Baby! I was so relieved when after a few more tries he learned that it was OK, and from then on he happily indulged in hand delivered treats.”

“Mikey is energetic and sweet. He needs a little finishing work, but since he is young that shouldn't take long.”

“Mikey will love whoever takes him home. He's very affectionate and happy to see people. While he enjoys running around the field, exploring. He's very well tempered and has good manners. He also did well on the leash, walking between the car, fields, and building.”

You can see what a terrific boy he is, so once your application is approved, make an appointment to meet him if he looks as though he may be a fit for your home, and come see for yourself what a great guy he is.

A remake of the Life ad was done years later featuring the same fellow, now identified as “Uncle Mikey.”
