Take a look at this gentle, sweet middle-aged Dobergirl.  We named her Betsy as a nod to Betsy Ross and Flag Day (14 June - let’s see those flags!).

She came to us through another rescue where she had been left.  They told us that while she apparently had been kept inside as a young pup, she had lived outside her entire life with other dogs until being surrendered.  As a result, she has some callouses and skin tags on her thigh and rump. Thankfully she has adapted very well to inside living, and her neatness proves she was house trained when young.

Her demeanor is very calm; this is not a high energy, rambunctious dog. (See Julius if you want one that is!)  She loves playing with toys, both stuffed and squeaky ones.  (As Dobers often do, sometimes she’ll rip the stuffing out of them.)  She likes to suck on her blankets and might rip them, but thankfully she doesn't eat them.  (I had a Weimaraner once who cut a blanket like pinking shears!)

She sits on command and doesn’t jump up.  She’s good with children and other dogs but will chase cats in an attempt to play with them.  Cats being cats, this may or may not be viewed with favor.  :-)

Here are some observations from our volunteers:

“Betsy is a sweet little petite girl.  She likes to get as close to you as possible and have her ears rubbed.”

“Talk about a sweet senior gal!  Betsy is meek and adorable, but she still has that vibrant, youthful personality so many Dobies maintain over their lifetime!  Her quiet nature will pull you right in, and you can’t help but love that precious little face.”

“Betsy is a pretty laid back lady who seems to take things in stride.  I could see her as being a bit of a couch potato and a dog who enjoys a comfortable sedate environment.  I don’t think kids would bother her but she just struck me as a dog who would be better in a mature home.  She was fine with Axtyn (really didn’t show much interest) and I’d like to see her with a couple of other dogs.”

As much of a joy as it is to adopt any dog, there’s something particularly special about adopting an older one such as this, especially one who has been kept outside all her life to this point.  Peace and contentment and appreciation radiate from every pore of a dog like this.  To have lived for so many years alone and outside and to now be inside and loved and coddled and cuddled - well, there’s just not much to equal the joy it is to the human as well as to the canine.

So here’s your chance for that kind of joy.  If a gentle, somewhat older Dobergirl appeals to you, make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved and come sit with her a bit.  I’m guessing if you do, you just may be taking this cuddlebug home.
